When the first Zetros made an appearance at the Eurosatory defence industry trade show in Paris a few years ago, it certainly raised a few eyebrows but wasn’t what you’d call a showstopper. However, chances are that when you get a look at the brand new Mercedes Zetros RV, you will never look at motorhomes the same way ever again.
Technically speaking this Unimog-based Zetros RV is more of a ridiculously OTT home on wheels than a standard motorhome as you probably know them today. The body is the work of Mercedes-Benz and Hartmann Spezialkarosserien while Hunerkopf took charge of making the cockpit and living space all it could be.
Right off the bat, the fact that it weighs in the region of 18 tons gives you some idea that this is no ordinary RV. Luckily, there’s a full 326BHP to play with courtesy of the BlueTec 7.2-litre engine, so you can be sure it moves…and how. And this is really only where the tale of big numbers starts, as along with a full 300-litre water tank to keep you and your small army going for a while, the fuel tank holds a massive 600-litres of diesel. It comes with its own power generator, solar panels and lithium-ion battery packs to keep everything working, including the air conditioning and dual internal heaters.
In terms of living standards, you’d be forgiven for wanting to give up your city apartment for this thing. It has a gorgeous living area with L-shaped seating, a luxury bathroom and a full functional kitchenette. Lavished in birds-eye maple and all manner of ostentatious accents, it really is palatial on a level never before seen in this kind of vehicle. There’s real leather all over the place and of course a satellite dish on the roof to pick up pretty much any TV or radio station in the world.
Topped off with a Bose sound system and Wi-Fi throughout the whole vehicle, you have yourself every reason to take a second look at your own motorhome and realise just how many corners were cut to keep it affordable. Speaking of which, the price of the Mercedes Zetros RV is something of a null point as it’s one of those cases whereby if you have to ask, chances are you cannot afford it – not even close!
Still, it’s good to see what’s possible when the biggest brains in the automotive world get together and do something like this just for the fun of it.
