There’s pretty amazing news this week for anyone that’s still finding it hard to get over the demise of the Volkswagen Camper…it’s back!
Well, it’s coming back at least and will be joined by a couple of other amazing concepts like the new Beetle SUV and some kind of Beetle Sport to boot.
VW has officially confirmed that it is beavering away behind the scenes on a brand new version of the already new Beetle, which this time around will form part of a much larger Beetle family. Along with a creative twist on the standard Beetle, the range will feature a new coupe, an SUV crossover and the first VW Camper to roll off the production line in decades.
Each of the new Beetle family members will be built around the same architecture as the latest VW Golf and while Volkswagen hasn’t commented on the specifics of the subject as of yet, it’s likely that the whole range will fall under the Beetle branding.
A New 2019 VW Camper
It of course goes without saying that the most exciting prospect of all is that of a new VW Camper. We’ve seen one or two concepts popping up from the German auto-giant over recent years, though it was clear that none were ever destined to make it to commercial production. Which technically isn’t a bad thing, as the Beetle we’re now destined to see in a few years will in all likelihood put its unreleased siblings to shame in style stakes.
Based loosely around the current Beetle, VW has confirmed that the new Camper will be designed with a distinctly sixties vibe inside and out, though in terms of engineering and technology it will be a truly state of the art vehicle. They’ve also confirmed it will launch with a range of 1-litre engine options, including a four-wheel-drive option.
Sadly though that’s where the good news comes to an end as while we’re now free to get as excited as we please about the upcoming VW Camper, it’s going to be quite a while before we get to play with it. The Camper is scheduled to follow shortly after the launch of the next Beetle…a car not slated to touch down until 2019!
SUV and Coupe Beetles Also Planned
Along with the standard Cabriolet and hatchback versions of the 2019 Beetle, VW will also be putting together an all-new coupe – effectively a full-fat Beetle sports car in its own right. If you ever caught sight of the e-Bugster concept car, this is pretty much the kind of thing they’re going for with the coupe.
And as for the Beetle SUV, it’s a concept that sounds almost too bizarre to imagine ever becoming a reality, but also happens to be pegged for a 2019 debut. In this case, take a look at the Beetle Dune concept that was brought to the motor show in Detroit in January and you’ll have a good idea of what’s to come.
